A successful APHA conference saw over 300 delegates from across Australia and New Zealand participate in 2 days of informative lectures and exhibits. Exhibitors ranged from medical device companies, government departments and a few software companies offering various technologies.

Congratulations goes to St Andrews Hospital Adelaide for winning the Baxter Award for Clinical Excellence. Received by St Andrews Clinical Auditor Deidre Galezowski and St Andrews Medical Director (and Edgebox Clinical Systems Director) Dr Chris Farmer. A fantastic achievement to win the top award two years in a row. Certainly some well deserved recognition for Stephen Walker and his team there who are doing some amazing work.

On the Monday Dr Chris Farmer gave an excellent talk on data for improvement using some public and private sector examples starting with the low-tech, high-impact IPMS Excel system developed at St Andrews Hospital. He then described the experience of using the GiGa system at the Repatriation General Hospital as a step-up system for single-hospital use. Finally, Chris gave an introduction to the third generation performance management system provided by the Edgebox platform with a heap of practical healthcare quality improvement modules. It was a nice introduction to the next presentation by George Neal on the APHA national indicator safety and quality database powered by the Edgebox platform.

Mr George Neal as project manager for the APHA Safety & Quality database gave an informative overview of the data collection using the Edgebox platform and described some of the ongoing work as the project now expands past the 100 facility mark as part of the full national roll-out. We really appreciated the really positive feedback from many hospitals already receiving the indicator summary reports, some of them have made nine data submissions covering over two years of data. The more data, the better the benchmarks for everyone, particularly as we get enough facilities involved to make better peer grouped reporting possible.

As part of the conference we are running a special offer for all APHA members until 30 November 2010. Get 30% off any module and 40% for 2 or more.
